About the Region
The heel of Italy’s boot! As a region it accounts for more than half of Italy’s olive oil production however when it comes to wine, it has two principal grape varieties driving production – Negroamaro (meaning black bitter) and Primitivo (meaning 'first to ripen'). It’s thought to be the case that when some of the Italians emigrated to the USA they brought some of those Primitivo vines with them - in the US it’s better known as Zinfandel. While the region has twenty-nine DOC wines, it only has four DOCG's. None of them exactly trip of the tongue easily – Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale (was the first in 2010), Castel del Monte Bombino Nero, Castel del Monte Nero di Troia Riserva and Castel del Monte Rosso Riserva!
